脳神経内科学では脳、脊髄、末梢神経、神経筋接合部、骨格筋に生じた様々な疾患の病態解明と治療開発を目指した研究活動を行っています。その中でも治療選択肢の乏しい難治性神経変性疾患を主たる研究領域としており、疾患の早期発見、早期診断および早期治療を目指して、バイオマーカー開発、基礎病態解明、新規治療開発に係る研究を推進しています。
臨床部門の業務としては、高齢化社会を迎えて患者数の増加が著しい認知症や脳卒中、神経変性疾患、多発性硬化症や重症筋無力症といった神経難病、てんかんなど多くの疾患を、最新のエビデンスに基づいて治療を行い、難治性神経疾患に対する核酸医薬品や抗体医薬品などの先進的医療の導入も進めています。また、医学科・大学院の学生、卒後医師への教育を通じて、優れた脳神経内科医・脳神経内科学研究者の育成を推進し、地域医療へも貢献できるよう活動をしています。

Major research activities of department of neurology include projects to clarify the pathogenesis and develop therapies on the various disorders involving brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junctions, and skeletal muscles. We are especially focusing on the intractable neurological disorders, in which the therapeutic options are limited, and conducting our research for early detection, early diagnosis, and early therapeutic intervention.
Our clinical activities are covering various common and professional neurological disorders including dementias, cerebrovascular diseases, intractable disorders such as neurodegenerative disorders, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and epilepsy etc. We have treated these patients based on the latest medical evidence using advanced therapies such as oligonucleotide therapeutics and biological medical products against refractory neurological disorders. As educational activities, we promote medical and graduate students, and postgraduate doctors to raise excellent neurologists/neurology researchers who can contribute to develop community medicine.
