病理学は病態を理解・把握する学問として進歩してきました。特に顕微鏡にて観察可能な形態学像を主体として、“がん”などを診断する病理診断として昨今の医療に生かされています。また、同時に病態把握の面では、ゲノム情報などの分子生物学的な解析も必要となっており、あらゆるツールを用いて総合的な判断が病理学には必要とされています。時代に必要とされる病理診断を提供しつつ、適切な治療へ誘導できる病理疾患Entityを確立させるべく、当教室では、具体的に以下の点に興味をもって研究をおこなっています。

1. 微小環境における薬剤耐性機構の探索とその病態生理
2. 腫瘍におけるがん遺伝子制御機構の解析
3. 頭頸部・口腔領域のがんにおける「前がん病変」とがん発生
4. 歯原性腫瘍の新規疾患Entityの創出と組織学的診断マーカーの開発

また、病理診断医(口腔病理診断医)の育成を目標とし、臨床各科と密な連携しながら診療、教育、研究活動を行っています。

Pathology has originally advanced as a discipline that enables the understanding and elucidation of disease mechanisms. Especially, pathological diagnosis-centered on morphological changes observable under the microscope-has played an important role in the diagnosis of diseases such as cancers and contributes significantly to modern science. In addition, in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of diseases, molecular biological analyses, including genomic information, are also essential. Thus, pathology requires an integrative approach to diagnosis. While providing pathology that meets the needs of the times, our department is also engaged in research aimed at advancing the field. Specifically, we are interested in the following research areas:

1. Investigation of drug resistance mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment and pathophysiology
2. Analysis of oncogene regulatory mechanisms in malignancies
3. Investigation of “precancerous lesions” and carcinogenesis in head and neck/oral cancers
4. Establishment of disease entities and development of histopathological diagnostic markers in odontogenic tumors

To train pathologists (including dental pathologists), we are actively engaged in clinical diagnosis, education, and research in close collaboration with various clinical departments.
