Psychiatry and Neuroscience
Psychiatric disorders are the most important causes of disease-related disabilities and are also the most influencing factors to reduce quality of life in patients with physical diseases. The Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience specializes in 1) diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of psychiatric disorders, 2) innovative researches of their etiologies, pathophysiology, clinical epidemiology, and treatments, and 3) clinical education of under- and post-graduate medical students and nurturing psychiatry professionals.

Research & Education
Research activities in the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience cover etiological, pathophysiological, clinical epidemiological, and therapeutic studies of various psychiatric disorders. 1) Etiological studies search for gene expression changes following stress and psychostimulant administration in experimental animals. 2) Pathophysiological studies include functional neuroimaging studies using positron emission tomography (PET), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and neurophysiological studies using dipole analysis, event-related potentials (ERPs), and magnetoencephalography (MEG). 3) Clinical epidemiological studies deal with young-onset dementia, 4) Therapeutic studies include adjunctive pharmacotherapy in elderly depression and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study of mood disorders.
Education for undergraduate students consists of early exposure to clinical activities in the first year, research tutorial in the second year, lectures on neuroscience in the third year, lectures on clinical psychiatry in the fourth year, bedside teaching in the fourth and fifth years, and clinical clerkship and related pragmatic lectures in the fifth and sixth year. The Department is also responsible for one-month psychiatric training for junior residents.
Clinical activities include 1) diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of outpatients and inpatients with various psychiatric disorders, 2) liaison activities for psychiatric disorders in patients with somatic diseases and for psychological problems in patients in palliative care and undergoing organ transplantation, 3) forensic psychiatry, 4) child and adolescent psychiatry, and 5) clinical trials of novel pharmacotherapy and innovative medical apparatuses. (A diagnosis support system for the depressed patients using optical topography was prefered with Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan as the ‘Advanced Medical Technology’ since 2009 april, and was approved officially as the medical insurance coverage in 2014.

The Department was founded in 1944 by Prof. Yoshihisa Inami who studied histopathological changes in cerebrovascular disorders and psychostimulant psychosis, and succeeded by the second professor Dr. Hiroshi Utena in 1957 who specialized in neurochemical and behavioral researches in schizophrenia and psychostimulant psychosis. The third professor Dr. Susumu Yokoi (1966) and the fourth professor Dr. Yukiteru Machiyama (1979) devoted their research years to lipid analysis in leucodystrophy and perception and event-related potential studies in schizophrenia, respectively. The fifth professor Dr. Masahiko Mikuni (1998) developed a wide range of studies of mood disorders using neurochemical, neuropharmacological, neuroimaging, and animal model methodologies. The sixth professor Dr. Masato Fukuda has been charing the Department since 2013 and taking over the studies of mood disorders as well as schizophrenia using neurophysiological, neuropsychological and neuroimaging multi-modalities.
