〔病因研究〕
・遺伝子研究･･･精神疾患の原因遺伝子を解明する研究。躁うつ病について染色体部位を絞った検討。
・死後脳研究･･･精神疾患患者の死後脳の病理学的・生化学的検討。
・神経発達学的研究･･･胎生・幼少期のストレス負荷動物や遺伝子改変動物の行動学的、脳組織学的検討。

〔病態研究〕
・脳画像研究･･･PETによりさまざまな気分障害の脳内糖代謝を検討。また、光トポグラフィ装置によるベッドサイドでの脳血流測定や、三次元ＭＲＩやＤＴＩをもちいた脳形態解析を実施。
・神経内分泌学的研究･･･気分障害におけるデキサメサゾン抑制試験を改良し、ストレス関連の神経内分泌学的病態を検討。診断への応用可能性を探求。
・神経生理学的病態研究･･･精神疾患の脳機能について、脳波ダイポール解析・事象関連電位・fMRIおよびMEGなどの方法で、神経生理学的な検討。
上記の他、疫学研究（若年認知症研究、少年非行と心的トラウマに関する研究、摂食障害の家族研究、精神免疫学的研究）や治療研究も行っている。
